The Bar Room Rule

I drank too much when I was 28
and circumstances moved me, after work,
to meet a friend, to talk and celebrate
or air complaints about my boss – a jerk –
and other stressors bound to nag or irk.
She taught me – “Be aware of where you are.
Don’t ever lay your head down on the bar.”
