Item One

The obligation of intelligence
is first to nurture self in sanity
and happiness, employing common sense
(which is a rare and special quality)
to find and hold the center’s golden rule
and grounded well, to then adventure out
exploring, growing, learning more than school
could ever teach, embracing doom and doubt
and finding truth is never what we dread –
hills are not as steep as they appear,
people aren’t evil, love’s not dead,
and laughter can be used to vanquish fear.

So here’s the question, bound to make you sad:
If you’re so brilliant, why are you not glad?
