Alone O’Clock

The traffic has subsided and the TV screens are dark.
The streetlights burn as brightly as the moon.
The atmosphere’s delighted with the evening’s blue remark
and midnight has agreed to be here soon.

In my room I’m pressing for an answer to my quiz –
Work and home and health are going fine;
I should count each blessing and should learn to love what is,
but lately I feel lonely all the time.

I knew you not a month ago and didn’t need you then.
I know no reason that I need you now.
But somehow what I didn’t know was I could love again –
I lost the habit but retained the how.

The traffic has subsided and the TV screens are dark.
The streetlights burn as brightly as the moon.
I gather your attentions and admit you’ve made your mark:
at any rate, I long to see you soon.
