I really don’t care who wrote the plays and sonnets we attribute to Shakespeare. It’s not like we’re paying royalties to his family. It would be satisfying to grant credit where it’s due, but that’s not what’s important. The work exists. The author was brilliant. His/her bio isn’t that significant.
I’m okay when others plagiarize my work. It’s happened a few times that I know of and probably other times about which I’m ignorant. They can lift my words but they can’t steal me, and I can always edit whatever I wrote to improve it.
My goal is to be read. I’d appreciate personal credit but there are likely to be more readers if there are more issuances of my words.
I don’t expect to make money at writing. I don’t intend to pay anything to be read, either. Being copied may constitute my best chance of increased readership. It’s okay with me if that boat floats.
